The Royal Lodge Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain which is open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings. It is run at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late September.
The event is named after Royal Lodge, a royal residence located in Windsor Great Park. It was first run in 1946 at Ascot, and it was originally open to horses of either gender. It was initially contested over a distance of 5 furlongs, and it was extended to its present length in 1948. The race was restricted to male horses only in 1987. In 2011 the Royal Lodge Stakes was transferred to Newmarket along with the Fillies' Mile as part of various changes to establish a Champions Day at Ascot.
The Royal Lodge Stakes became part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series in 2008. The winner now earns an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. [1]
Four winners of the Royal Lodge Stakes have gone on to win the following year's Derby. These are St. Paddy, Royal Palace, Shirley Heights and Benny the Dip.
